LANDFALL-The ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ developing over the northeast Arabian Sea is expected to make landfall between Mandvi in India’s western state of Gujarat and Karachi in southern Pakistan by Thursday evening.

WIND SPEED-The cyclone is expected to have maximum sustained wind speeds of between 115-125 km (71-78 miles) per hour, gusting up to 140 km (87 miles) per hour.

CURRENT LOCATION-According to India’s weather office, the storm, on Thursday morning, lay centred about 180 km (112 miles) west-southwest of Gujarat’s Jakhau Port and 270 km (168 miles) south-southwest of Karachi.

FATALITIES-Seven people have died in India so far due to mishaps stemming from extreme weather conditions caused by the cyclone, including rough seas and wall collapses.

EVACUATION
India: About 75,000 people have been evacuated from vulnerable coastal communities in Gujarat so far.
Pakistan: About 62,000 people were evacuated from high risk areas until Wednesday evening.

As the coastal areas brace for the arrival of Cyclone Biparjoy, the Border Security Force (BSF) deployed along the coastline has intensified their efforts to provide assistance to the villagers residing in the border region. In preparation for the landfall of the ‘Very Severe Cyclonic Storm’ Biparjoy, expected to occur between 6 to 8 pm on Thursday, the BSF has mobilised their resources and personnel to support the affected communities.

According to the official statement, the unwavering commitment of BSF aims to protect valuable lives, mitigate suffering, maintain human dignity, and instil a sense of security among the border population.

The BSF said in its release that shelter is being provided to vulnerable villagers, ensuring their safety during this perilous time. 150 villagers from Thumari and Walawariwand villages have sought refuge in the BSF camp.

“BSF troops have made all necessary adjustments, accommodating the villagers within their facilities to ensure their well-being. Among those sheltered, there are 34 children, as well as senior citizens, males, and females. Cyclone Biparjoy: BSF intensifies their efforts to assist people of Gujarat
As the coastal areas brace for the arrival of Cyclone Biparjoy, the Border Security Force (BSF) deployed along the coastline has intensified their efforts to provide assistance to the villagers residing in the border region. In preparation for the landfall of the ‘Very Severe Cyclonic Storm’ Biparjoy, expected to occur between 6 to 8 pm on Thursday, the BSF has mobilised their resources and personnel to support the affected communities.

According to the official statement, the unwavering commitment of BSF aims to protect valuable lives, mitigate suffering, maintain human dignity, and instil a sense of security among the border population.

The BSF said in its release that shelter is being provided to vulnerable villagers, ensuring their safety during this perilous time. 150 villagers from Thumari and Walawariwand villages have sought refuge in the BSF camp.

“BSF troops have made all necessary adjustments, accommodating the villagers within their facilities to ensure their well-being. Among those sheltered, there are 34 children, as well as senior citizens, males, and females. The BSF is diligently providing essential support such as drinking water, food, medical coverage, and maintaining hygiene and sanitation standards,” the release stated. Read more

In anticipation of cyclone Biparjoy’s landfall, commercial flight operations at Jamnagar airport in Gujarat will be temporarily halted until Friday as a precautionary measure. The airport management has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) for a duration of three days, from Wednesday to Friday. Additionally, the airport has made necessary arrangements by storing an adequate supply of diesel and petrol for emergency operations. There are no aircraft in the parking area at the airport.

As per the NOTAM, Air India and Star Air have cancelled their scheduled flights. NOTAM which means ‘Notice to Airmen’ — is issued at the airport for flights coming from outside.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) is supporting the government of Pakistan’s efforts to prepare for and respond to the public health impact of Tropical Cyclone Biparjoy.WHO’s Incident Management Support Team (IMST) has been activated to ensure coordination of all health activities on the ground by health cluster partners and federal and provincial health ministries, as well as mobilise resources for preparedness and response activities. Additionally, WHO has prepositioned essential emergency medicines in Sindh, including oral rehydration salts (ORS), aqua tabs, and essential medicine, to assist vulnerable communities affected by the cyclone by ensuring uninterrupted access to health care and limiting the spread of infectious diseases.
